RSU1 EDUCATION FOUNDATION

A newly-named “RSU1 Education Foundation,” formerly “Help-A-Kid,” has begun a community-wide initiative to raise awareness of their organization that awards grants to individual teachers who cannot fund innovative education programs for their students within their current school budgets.

Our Education Foundation can also receive grants from national and international companies, as well as from education foundations. The Foundation will serve as the fiscal sponsor for the new Morse High Capital Campaign and accept tax deductible contributions made to support the building campaign for the proposed Morse High School, as approved by the voters in the November 2017 Referendum.

Four years ago, the RSU1 Education Foundation began assisting students who wanted to attend after-school activities or programs that carried an extra cost. The concept and program quickly expanded and an educational 501(c)(3) non-profit organization was formed to allow tax-deductible donations. The Foundation has received education grants from national and international companies, as well as from education foundations.

A wide variety of programs that met application criteria have been funded, from creative technology support in the classroom to early intervention in literacy and math. These awards have included:

  • A three-day environmental and outdoor residential program for all BMS seventh graders

  • A multi-functional Elmo Document Camera that projects images on a wide screen

  • An on-line collection of books at the Phippsburg and Woolwich Central libraries

  • A "Fitnessgram" software program for all 4th-9th graders to input fitness related data

  • A Robotics Team of Woolwich and BMS students to research the food supply chain

  • A web-based collection of guided reading books, "Reading A-Z", for first graders

  • An iPad for individual and whole group instruction in literacy and math in Kindergarten

  • Lego Robotics kits for 2nd graders to foster early interest in science, technology and math

  • A camera for the Morse Yearbook Club to encourage literacy and photojournalism

Tax-deductible donations can be made to this region-wide non-profit at RSU1 Education Foundation, c/o William Racine, CPA, Treasurer, 1 Front St, Customs House, 2nd floor, Bath, ME 04530.
