Students have been learning about Thanksgiving in this week's library classes. In addition to learning about the history of the holiday, we researched Squanto, Indigenous Nations and facts about turkeys using PebbleGo and Epic and watched a Scholastic video about pilgrim life. Dike Newell School second grade students will have the opportunity to participate in Coding Club this year. Under the direction of Student Information Systems Manager Matt Frey-Davis and DNS Librarian Lisa Hardman, students will be introduced to basic coding concepts through the use of Bee-Bot robots. Thanks to the generosity of the American Legion Smith-Tobey Unit 21 of Bath, the Dike Newell School Library has ten new library books. Secretary Dolly Young and Sergeant at Arms Margie Russell made the presentation to School Librarian Lisa Hardman and second grade students from Ms. Michaud's class. Bath Tech student, Henry Putman, built a new Buddy Bench for the students at Dike-Newell School. A Buddy Bench is a designated seat in a school playground where students can go if they want to play with someone or talk to someone. Thank you for supporting our DNS students, Henry!

Today we had our October community meeting. We learned about "citizenship" and how to be good citizens in our school hallways. We had fun dancing along to "I've got a new way to walk" and celebrated the return of the Principal's Club, beginning next Monday! What is Principal's Club? Mystery staff members will have bee cards each day, and will be watching for students who are setting a great example with safe, kind, responsible behavior at school to give a card to. Students who receive a bee card come to the office at the end of the day to celebrate by signing the celebrity book, selecting a small prize, and putting their name on the 100s chart. When we fill the 100 chart, we will have a whole-school celebration! Have a great weekend DNS citizens! Date: Monday, November 4th Time: 6:00-7:00pm Location: Montgomery Auditorium, Morse High School/Bath Tech RSU1 and the Sagadahoc Sheriff's Office have partnered together to invite parents, guardians, and caregivers to an Internet Safety Night. Come learn how to talk to students about what they see on the internet, as well as ways they can avoid being victimized on the internet. The Sagadahoc County Sheriff's Office, a local affiliate of Maine State Police Computer Crimes, has been working with RSU1 to share internet safety presentations to its students. These presentations cover privacy and security on the internet, good citizenship, and social media use. This new presentation is designed for adults trying to guide and safeguard their students online.

Second grade Library Acting Club students from Ms. Henrikson's class recently performed their play "Little Red Riding Hood" for pre-k and first grade students. First grade has been comparing and contrasting multiple versions of this story and greatly enjoyed seeing it brought to life. Many thanks to the actors for their hard work and missed recesses.

Second grade students have been learning about trickster tales during their weekly library classes. Trickster tales are found in all parts of the world and often feature a smaller animal who, using cunning and wit, outsmarts a stronger animal. These stories can be humorous and have been passed down for generations. After hearing a wide array of stories, students used handheld maps to locate the setting for each of the stories. They also discovered that the PebbleGo website has a multitude of information on countries and cultures. Dike Newell students have been learning about Flag Day during this week's library classes. Observed on June 14th, Flag Day honors the United States flag and commemorates the day in 1777 when the design for the nation's first flag was approved. Students read about the history of the flag as well as flag etiquette, the Pledge of Allegiance and saw what various state flags looked like. What a fun week at Dike-Newell School so far!! The second graders are visiting Maine Maritime Museum, our first grade classes are continuing their visits to Patten Free Library, and in Kindergarten the chicks have hatched! To top that all off, today we began our screening of next year's kindergarten students. Sometimes May brings a little "May-hem" but this week is packed with greatness!!

Dike Newell students have been learning about Screen-Free Week during library classes this week. Celebrated every year at the beginning of May, Screen-Free Week is an invitation for everyone, children, adults and entire communities, to switch off completely from staring at screens and take a well-deserved break from the digital world. April is poetry month and at Dike Newell we have been learning all about poetry in this week's library classes. Students discovered that poetry is a type of writing that attempts to stir a reader's imagination or emotions. Poetry appears in a great many forms and styles including nursery rhymes, concrete, haiku, acrostic and free verse. As Earth day was on Monday, April 22nd, we also read "Earth Day" by Rachel Grack as well as "10 Things I Can Do to Help My World" by Melanie Walsh. Students at Dike Newell have been participating in Chickadee Award voting during their library classes this week. This award is in its nineteenth year, and is given annually to one of ten picture books nominated by a committee of teachers, librarians, and early literacy professionals. Students read all ten books and then vote for their favorite. The purpose of the Chickadee Award is to encourage children to develop an appreciation for excellence in writing and illustration that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. Second grade acting club students from Ms. Robison's class have been performing their "Cinderella" play for pre-k and kindergarten students this week. Under the direction of librarian Ms. Hardman, the students gave up many recesses to rehearse for their play.
